CCAT Math Practice Questions
Updated November 2, 2026
Math and logic is one of the three areas of the CCAT. The math questions aren’t advanced: they’re arithmetic, percentages, ratios, averages and number series. What makes them hard is doing them in your head in about 18 seconds each. Criteria says calculators aren’t allowed and none of the questions need one.
The 15 questions below are original practice in the style of the CCAT, with five choices each. They aren’t real CCAT questions. For the logic side of this area, see the logic practice.
Quick approaches
- Averages: turn the average into a total first. “Four numbers average 10” means they add up to 40.
- Percentages: 10% is moving the decimal one place, so 15% is 10% plus half of it. For two discounts in a row, apply the second one to the new price, not the original.
- Rates: find the rate for one unit (miles per hour, pages per minute), then scale it up.
- Number series: check the differences between terms first. If they don’t follow a pattern, check whether each term is multiplied by something.
- Estimate when you can. If only one choice is close to a rough answer, pick it and move on.
CCAT math practice questions

The average of three numbers is 15. Two of the numbers are 10 and 17. What is the third number?Answer: BThree numbers averaging 15 add up to 45. The two you know add up to 27, so the third is 45 - 27 = 18.
-
What number comes next in the series: 5, 8, 14, 23, 35, ...?Answer: DThe differences are 3, 6, 9 and 12, going up by 3 each time. The next difference is 15, so 35 + 15 = 50.
-
A jacket priced at $80 is marked 25% off. At the register, you get another 10% off the sale price. What do you pay?Answer: A25% off $80 leaves $60. Then 10% off $60 is $6, so you pay $54. Adding the discounts to get 35% off ($52) is the common mistake.
-
A train travels 180 miles in 3 hours. At the same speed, how long does it take to travel 300 miles?Answer: EThe speed is 180 ÷ 3 = 60 miles per hour, so 300 miles takes 300 ÷ 60 = 5 hours.
-
The ratio of boys to girls in a class of 32 students is 3 to 5. How many girls are in the class?Answer: CThe ratio has 3 + 5 = 8 parts, so each part is 32 ÷ 8 = 4 students. Girls are 5 parts: 5 × 4 = 20.
-
What is 15% of 240?Answer: D10% of 240 is 24, and 5% is half of that, 12. Together that's 24 + 12 = 36.
-
What number comes next in the series: 2, 6, 18, 54, ...?Answer: AEach term is 3 times the one before it, so the next is 54 × 3 = 162.
-
Four workers can finish a job in 6 days. Working at the same rate, how many days would it take 3 workers?Answer: CThe job takes 4 × 6 = 24 worker-days. Three workers need 24 ÷ 3 = 8 days. Fewer workers always means more days, which rules out 4.5 at a glance.
-
Which of these fractions is the largest?Answer: EAs decimals, they are about 0.60, 0.56, 0.57, 0.58 and 0.625. So 5/8 is the largest.
-
A store sells pens at 3 for $2. How much do 18 pens cost?Answer: B18 pens is 6 groups of 3, and each group costs $2, so the total is 6 × $2 = $12.
-
A team's monthly sales rose from 250 units to 300 units. What was the percentage increase?Answer: AThe increase is 50 units, and 50 ÷ 250 = 0.2, or 20%. Dividing by the new figure, 300, gives 16.7%, which is the trap.
-
Sam is 4 years older than Ana. In 6 years, their ages will add up to 40. How old is Ana now?Answer: EIn 6 years, Ana will be her age plus 6 and Sam will be her age plus 10. Twice her age plus 16 equals 40, so twice her age is 24 and she is 12 now. Check: in 6 years they'll be 18 and 22, which add up to 40.
-
What number comes next in the series: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ...?Answer: CThese are the square numbers: 1 × 1, 2 × 2, 3 × 3 and so on. The next is 6 × 6 = 36. The differences (3, 5, 7, 9) also lead there: 25 + 11 = 36.
-
A team sold 40 units on Monday, 55 on Tuesday and 25 on Wednesday. What was the average number sold per day?Answer: BThe total is 40 + 55 + 25 = 120, and 120 ÷ 3 = 40.
-
A rectangle is twice as long as it is wide, and its perimeter is 36 cm. What is its area?Answer: DThe perimeter is two widths plus two lengths, which is 6 widths. So the width is 36 ÷ 6 = 6 cm and the length is 12 cm. The area is 6 × 12 = 72 square cm.
