CCAT Spatial Reasoning Practice
Updated November 2, 2026
Spatial reasoning is one of the three areas of the CCAT. Criteria describes it as the ability to visualize objects in space, make spatial judgments, and solve object and pattern problems. On the real test, these questions use pictures: which shape doesn’t belong, which shape comes next in a series, or what a shape looks like after it’s turned.
The pictures can’t be shown here, so the 15 questions below describe every shape in words. They practice the same mental skills: rotating, mirroring, folding and tracking a pattern. They’re original practice, not real CCAT questions.
Quick approaches
- Track one feature at a time. In a picture series, check one thing (number of sides, shading, position of a dot), then the next. Most series change only one or two features.
- Rotation vs reflection. A rotated shape can be turned back to the original; a mirror image can’t without flipping it over. Pick one corner or detail and follow it.
- Odd one out. Find the rule four of the shapes share, such as the same number of sides or the same direction of turn.
- Cubes and dice. Faces that are opposite each other never touch. On a standard die, opposite faces add up to 7.
- Folding. Each fold doubles the layers, so a hole punched through the folded paper appears once per layer.
CCAT spatial reasoning practice questions
-
Which capital letter looks exactly the same after it is turned upside down (rotated 180 degrees)?Answer: ERotated 180 degrees, S looks like S again. M becomes W and W becomes M, E ends up facing the other way, and U turns into an upside-down U.
-
Which capital letter looks exactly the same in a mirror held beside it (a left-to-right flip)?Answer: BT is the same on its left and right halves, so its mirror image is identical. R, S, N and L all come out reversed.
-
You are facing north. You turn 90 degrees to your right, then turn around 180 degrees, then turn 90 degrees to your left. Which direction are you facing?Answer: DA right turn from north faces east. Turning around faces west. A left turn from west faces south.
-
A clock with no numbers shows exactly 3:00. What time does it appear to show when you look at it in a mirror?Answer: AA mirror flips left and right. The minute hand still points straight up at 12, but the hour hand now points left, where the 9 would be, so it looks like 9:00.
-
A large cube is painted red on every face, then cut into 27 equal small cubes (3 by 3 by 3). How many of the small cubes have paint on exactly two faces?Answer: CCubes with exactly two painted faces sit in the middle of an edge. A cube has 12 edges, and each edge of a 3 by 3 by 3 cube has one middle piece, so there are 12.
-
Using the same painted cube cut into 27 small cubes, how many small cubes have no paint at all?Answer: BOnly the single cube in the very center touches no outside face. The 8 corner cubes have three painted faces, the 12 edge cubes have two, and the 6 face-center cubes have one: 8 + 12 + 6 + 1 = 27.
-
A square sheet of paper is folded in half, then folded in half again to make a smaller square. One hole is punched through all the layers, near the middle of the folded square. How many holes are there when the paper is unfolded?Answer: ETwo folds make four layers, and the punch goes through every layer, so the unfolded sheet has four holes.
-
An arrow points straight up. Each step, it turns 90 degrees clockwise. Which way does it point after 7 steps?Answer: AEvery 4 steps brings the arrow back to where it started, so 7 steps is the same as 3 steps. From up, three quarter turns clockwise go right, down, then left.
-
A window is divided into a 2 by 2 grid of four equal square panes. How many squares of any size can you find in it?Answer: DThere are 4 small squares, plus the large square made by the whole window: 5 in total.
-
On a standard die, opposite faces add up to 7. A die sits on a table with 2 on top and 3 facing you. What number is on the bottom?Answer: CThe bottom face is opposite the top. The top shows 2, so the bottom is 7 - 2 = 5. The 3 facing you doesn't change that.
-
A series of shapes goes: triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon. Which shape comes next?Answer: AEach shape has one more side than the one before (3, 4, 5, 6), so the next has 7 sides: a heptagon.
-
A series of shapes goes: shaded triangle, unshaded square, shaded pentagon. Which shape comes next?Answer: DTwo things change. Each shape gains one side, and the shading alternates. After a shaded pentagon comes an unshaded shape with six sides.
-
You walk 4 blocks north, then 3 blocks east, then 4 blocks south. Where are you compared with where you started?Answer: BThe 4 blocks north and 4 blocks south cancel out, which leaves you 3 blocks east of the start.
-
Which capital letter has no line of symmetry at all?Answer: EH, T and X can be split into matching left and right halves, and E into matching top and bottom halves. G can't be folded onto itself along any line.
-
A flat pattern for a cube is shaped like a cross. It has a row of four squares, numbered 1 to 4 from left to right, plus square 5 above square 2 and square 6 below square 2. When it is folded into a cube, which square ends up opposite square 2?Answer: CIn a row of four squares that wraps around the cube, squares two apart end up opposite each other: 1 is opposite 3, and 2 is opposite 4. Squares 5 and 6 fold to become the top and bottom, opposite each other.
